Operatives of the Nigeria Police Taskforce on Illegal Mining have arrested a 38-year-old man over the unlawful possession of  954 suspected explosive materials in Zamfara. 

The suspect, identified as Mustapha Mohammad, was arrested on January 27 at about 4:15 p.m. following intelligence-led operations, security sources said.

He was intercepted while driving a Toyota Corolla with registration number KUJ 933 EJ, after which a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 954 pieces of suspected explosives concealed in polyethene bags.

Security sources said the recovered materials were believed to be intended for use in activities capable of causing public disturbance and a breach of peace.

The suspect is currently in police custody, while the recovered items have been secured as exhibits.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the source and intended destination of the explosives, as well as to identify any accomplices.

The police further stated that the arrest shows their commitment to curbing the spread of illegal explosives and protecting lives and property across the country.
