Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé’s relentless scoring run continued on Sunday as he netted the decisive goal in the club’s 1-0 win over nine-man Getafe, propelling Los Blancos back to the top of La Liga.
The French forward extended his remarkable streak to 11 consecutive games with a goal, striking in the 80th minute to restore Madrid’s two-point lead over Barcelona, who had briefly gone top after edging past Girona the previous day.
Getafe had held firm for much of the match but crumbled late on after Allan Nyom was shown a straight red card just a minute after coming off the bench for a reckless challenge on Vinícius Júnior.
Within moments, Mbappé latched onto a clever pass from Arda Güler, spun past his marker, and slotted home off the post for his 10th La Liga goal of the season — a tally that also leads the Champions League scoring charts.
Madrid manager Xabi Alonso rotated his side ahead of crucial fixtures against Juventus in midweek and arch-rivals Barcelona next weekend’s Clásico, leaving Vinícius on the bench initially.
But the Brazilian’s introduction in the second half proved decisive, as both Getafe dismissals stemmed from fouls on him.
Mbappé, back in the lineup after recovering from a minor ankle injury, looked sharp from the outset.
He twice came close to opening the scoring early on, forcing saves from David Soria and dragging a curling effort inches wide.
Madrid gradually found rhythm before the break, with Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo Goes testing the Getafe keeper, while David Alaba’s free-kick and a Fede Valverde strike added to the pressure.
In the second half, Vinícius’ pace and flair began to torment the hosts, who grew increasingly desperate in defence.
After Nyom’s dismissal and Mbappé’s goal, Getafe’s frustration boiled over again when Alex Sancris received a second yellow card for another unnecessary foul on Vinícius, reducing them to nine men.
Despite their disadvantage, Getafe nearly snatched an equaliser in stoppage time when Abu Kamara broke through on goal, but Thibaut Courtois produced a crucial save with his knee to preserve Madrid’s victory.
Elsewhere in La Liga, newly promoted Elche continued their promising start with a goalless draw against Athletic Bilbao, leaving them seventh in the table, one spot above their Basque rivals.
Rayo Vallecano climbed to tenth after cruising to a 3-0 win at Levante, while struggling Real Sociedad grabbed a late 1-1 draw against ten-man Celta Vigo.
