South Africa secured two loans totalling $405 million (R7.4 billion) from the New Development Bank (NDB) on Friday to finance critical infrastructure projects in Limpopo and the North West.
Announced by the National Treasury, the deal provides $200 million for the construction of the Limpopo Central Hospital Project in Polokwane and $205 million for the Magalies Bulk Water Supply Scheme.
Treasury stated that the loan agreements continue a vital partnership to “advance South Africa’s sustainable infrastructure priorities.”
The healthcare funding will support the construction of a new 488-bed tertiary facility to ease severe regional pressures.
Treasury highlighted that Limpopo faces “rising demand for tertiary healthcare services, ageing hospital infrastructure, and shortages of specialised medical facilities.”
Once complete, the hospital will serve as the province’s main referral centre, offering “modern, resilient, and patient-centred healthcare infrastructure equipped with advanced diagnostic, treatment, and information technology systems” while supporting medical education and research.
The remaining $205 million will finance the Magalies Bulk Water Supply Scheme to resolve chronic water shortages across six municipalities, including Rustenburg and Bela-Bela.
The project targets areas where demand currently exceeds available supply to boost water security for homes and local businesses.
Treasury labelled the scheme “a flagship investment aimed at improving reliable access to drinking water and supporting inclusive growth in the Northwest and Limpopo provinces.”
