NEMA Deploys Teams as Heavy Floods Hit States

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed search and rescue teams across multiple states following torrential rainfall and severe flooding that killed residents, displaced families, and destroyed infrastructure in Nigeria.

As the Nigerian Meteorological Agency warned of persistent heavy downpours during the peak of the rainy season, NEMA activated its operational units to coordinate emergency response efforts and deliver relief.

NEMA spokesperson Manzo Ezekiel confirmed that rescue teams are advancing to severely impacted regions, stating, “We are not lowering our guard yet, because the season is still on.”

Emergency workers and local authorities are actively managing widespread destruction across several key regions.

In Bauchi State, severe flooding killed two people in Kirfi Local Government Area, damaging thousands of homes and displacing families who are currently sheltering with relatives.

In Edo State, overflow from the Ojirami Dam submerged the Enwan-Igarra-Ososo Expressway, drowning livestock and disrupting local schools, though emergency repairs have temporarily mitigated dam collapse risks.

In Bayelsa State, rapid erosion along the Ekoli River swallowed more than 200 homes in the Obogoro community, threatening local schools and public facilities.

Meanwhile, in Imo and Rivers States, floodwaters trapped residents in Akwakuma, forcing NEMA to execute evacuations to higher ground, while Port Harcourt neighbourhoods suffered prolonged inundation that damaged homes and community centres.
