The Netherlands has issued its first red heat alert following the record-breaking heatwave that has swept across Europe.
The country’s national weather institute announced the alert on Thursday, warning of dangerous conditions across much of the country, with temperatures expected to reach up to 40°C in some areas.
“The situation is dangerous; follow the guidance from the government and emergency services,” the institute said.

The red alert covers eight of the Netherlands’ 12 provinces, while the northern region and the southern province of Zeeland remain under an orange alert.
Authorities said the warnings will remain in effect until at least Saturday.
The extreme heat has also disrupted transport services, with Dutch rail operators reducing train schedules.
The country’s infrastructure minister has advised residents to avoid road travel unless absolutely necessary.
