Life returned to normal in Niger’s capital city, Niamey, on Sunday after the ruling military regime and its Russian paramilitary partners successfully crushed a troop mutiny.
Heavy overnight clashes erupted between Friday and Saturday as mutineers attempted to storm the presidential compound and barricade themselves inside a nearby airbase.
The Nigerien army and Russian Africa Corps forces regained full control late Saturday, arresting several mutineers while killing others during the intense fighting.
Residents reopened shops, visited local markets, and resumed daily activities across Niamey as authorities reopened access to the airport and presidency.
However, the military maintained a heavy security footprint, establishing machine-gun checkpoints and searching individuals entering key government zones.
Local business owners expressed relief over the restored order, stressing that the nation cannot afford internal conflict while actively battling regional terrorism.
General Abdourahamane Tiani, who seized power during a July 2023 coup, has increasingly aligned Niger with Russian security apparatuses while severing ties with traditional Western partners like France.
Foreign governments reacted swiftly to the stabilisation efforts, with Saudi Arabia declaring solidarity with Niger’s security. At the same time, Italian officials confirmed that their personnel training local forces remain safe and operational in the capital.
