The Nigerian National Grid has collapsed for the second time in 2026.
Around 11:00 am on Tuesday, the country’s power generation reached zero megawatts (MW).
Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) indicates a total shutdown of the country’s grid.
Major distribution companies, such as Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, and Yola DisCos, all reported zero power allocation after the collapse, according to power allocation records.
The latest collapse comes just days after the first incident of the year, which occurred last Friday.
It also comes after a similar grid failure on December 29, 2025, which resulted in nationwide power outages.
According to reports, by around 11:00 a.m., electricity generation had drastically decreased from over 4,500 megawatts to zero.
All 23 grid-connected power plants lost output during the incident, according to checks.
Grid collapses in Nigeria have often been linked to technical faults, poor maintenance of transmission infrastructure, and fluctuations in generation capacity.
As of the time of this report, the cause of the latest collapse had not been confirmed. Officials of the Transmission Company of Nigeria had yet to issue an official statement explaining the incident.
