Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, announced the arrangement on Thursday in Abuja. The discount will prioritise public transport operators nationwide.

Oyedele spoke during a press briefing on petrol prices and subsidy-related issues. He said the measure does not amount to a return to petrol subsidy. Instead, he said the government will allow NNPC to sell petrol to eligible users at cost during the period.

“We are offering a discount on petrol dispensed by NNPC Limited for the next 30 days in the first instance with priority for public transporters nationwide,” Oyedele said.

“So, it’s not a subsidy; the government is just saying we sell to you at cost,” he added.

The announcement comes following varying petrol prices at NNPC stations across the country. NNPC’s latest reported price list puts petrol at N1,355 per litre in Lagos and Rivers. The price is listed at N1,370 per litre in Abuja.

The government is expected to provide more details on how public transport operators will implement and access the discount.
