Nigerian Senate Shakes Up Committees with New Leadership

Following the endorsement of bills by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu to create development commissions across different regions, the Senate has made slight modifications, appointing new chairpersons and deputy chairpersons to oversee these bodies.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced on Tuesday that Senator Babangida Hussaini and Senator Muntari Dandutse will take on the roles of Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee for the North West Development Commission.

“Likewise, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Senator Kenneth Eze have been designated as Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee for the South East Development Commission, while Senator Titus Zam and Senator Isa Jibrin will lead the Senate Committee for the North Central Development Commission.” He said.

The Senate also reorganised some standing committees, with Senator Abdul Ningi moving from the Population Committee to chair the Senate Committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), while Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, who previously oversaw the Local Content Committee, is now in charge of the Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations.

Additional appointments include Senator Garba Maidoki as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Development and Joel Thomas as the newly appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content. Victor Umeh, who previously led the Diaspora Committee, will head the Senate Committee on National Population and National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
