Nigeria’s Awoniyi Joins Union Berlin On Loan

Nigeria international, Taiwo Awoniyi, has joined Bundesliga side Union Berlin on a year-long loan.

Awoniyi, who is on the books of English Premier League champions, Liverpool, will spend the 2020-21 season in Germany after a switch was agreed between the clubs on Saturday.

The 23-year-old Liverpool striker is not new to the Bundesliga having spent last season on loan at FSV Mainz 05, making 12 appearances and scoring one goal,

Awoniyi, a FIFA U17 World Cup winner in 2013, joined the Reds as an 18-year-old in 2015. He signed a long-term contract with the Jurgen Klopp side in the summer of 2018, extending his contract at Anfield to 2023.

Awoniyi’s decision to join Union Berlin put paid to rumours Celtic were keen on him.

The Scottish Premiership champions may have been looking for an alternative to Odsonne Edouard, with Awoniyi boasting a similar stature and physical strengths.

British media reports that Liverpool would be willing to sell him for a £9 million fee.
