NiMET Issues Warning of High Rainfall in May, June

According to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), the country’s coastal cities are likely to experience flash floods during May and June 2025 due to heavy rains.

This information was revealed by Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, in Abuja during the presentation of the yearly climatic forecast for 2025.

He explained that sections of Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kwara, as well as the northern and central Plateau states, are expected to have a delayed beginning of rain.

On the other hand, early onset is anticipated over parts of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi, as well as the southern states of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Anambra. A typical onset is anticipated for the remainder of the nation.

Additionally, parts of Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, FCT, Ekiti, and Ondo states are expected to have an earlier than usual finish to the rainy season.

It is anticipated that areas of the states of Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Lagos, Kwara, Taraba, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu may see a delayed season’s conclusion.

In addition, temperatures are predicted to be usually higher nationwide than the long-term average. January, February, March, and May are expected to see both daytime and nighttime temperatures above the long-term average across the majority of the nation.

While most of the northern states are expected to see warmer-than-normal temperatures, April daytime and overnight temperatures are expected to be typically cooler than usual.

Keyamo concluded his lecture by advising anyone involved in rainfall-dependent activities, such as rainfed agriculture, to consult the Nigerian Meteorological Agency or review the Seasonal Climate Change document for information on the anticipated beginning dates.
