The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has cautioned beach users to be extra vigilant this weekend as a full moon spring tide is set to affect coastal conditions in South Africa.

According to the NSRI, the spring tide will peak on Monday, January 5, 2026, but its effects will be felt for at least three days along South Africa’s entire coastline, bringing higher-than-normal high tides and lower-than-normal low tides.

NSRI spokesperson Andrew Ingram explained that the phenomenon occurs when the sun, moon, and Earth align during the full moon phase, intensifying gravitational forces on the oceans and resulting in more extreme tidal movements.

He stated that swimmers are advised to stick to beaches with lifeguard services, while anglers, hikers and other coastal users should be particularly cautious during periods of incoming high tide.

“Higher high tides and lower low tides will be experienced throughout this weekend and into next week. Swimmers are urged to visit lifeguard-protected beaches, and anglers and hikers should exercise caution, especially during the incoming high tide.”

Ingram also urged the public to plan activities around tide schedules, monitor local weather updates and place safety first at all times.

He added that emergencies should be reported by dialling 112, while further safety information is available on the NSRI website.
