Obi Free to Return to Labour Party- Datti

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has said Peter Obi would be welcomed back to the party if he fails to secure the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket for 2027.

Baba-Ahmed remarked during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, saying it would be better for Obi to return to the Labour Party than pursue what he described as “another type of agenda”.

He said Obi would face no hostility if he returned, stressing that the party remained open to him should his bid within the ADC not succeed.

The comments come after Obi recently aligned himself with an opposition coalition led by the ADC, almost three years after both men contested the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party platform.

Baba-Ahmed also dismissed claims that he had declared an intention to run for president, describing the reports as untrue.

He explained that he merely reaffirmed his membership of the Labour Party, adding that any declaration of interest must wait for the release of the INEC timetable and an official call by the party.

According to him, the reports stemmed from social media sensationalism, which he said often fuels misleading narratives among emotionally driven audiences.
