The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 3,000 personnel across Abuja before Nigeria’s October 1 Independence celebrations.
The FCT CDPRO, DSC Monica Ojobi, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
The deployment is part of security measures for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. The NSCDC FCT Command said the operation will cover the period before, during and after the celebrations.
FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu ordered the deployment to strengthen security and maintain law and order. The NSCDC will also protect lives and property across Abuja. Personnel from several specialised units are taking part in the operation.
They include the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force and Crack Squad. Others are the Agro Rangers, CBRNE Unit and Counter-Terrorism Unit. The operation will focus on strategic locations across the capital. These include shopping malls, markets, motor parks and amusement centres.
The Corps will also protect Critical National Assets and Infrastructure in the FCT. In addition, undercover operatives have been activated for surveillance and intelligence gathering. The operatives will monitor locations suspected to be criminals’ hideouts. The command said it will also monitor unfinished buildings and other identified black spots.
Meanwhile, Odumosu has directed Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to maintain a strong presence across their areas. He also ordered personnel to remain alert throughout the celebration period.
The Commandant warned officers against any security breach during the celebrations.
“As usual, I will not tolerate any form of security breach. All hands must be on deck. Ensure your personnel comply wholesomely,” Odumosu said.
The NSCDC said the deployment aims to ensure a safe and peaceful Independence celebration across the FCT.
