One Killed, Seven Injured in Gombe Assembly Site Collapse

The Gombe State Government has ordered an immediate investigation into the collapse of a section of the cantilevered entrance canopy at the construction site of the new Gombe State House of Assembly Complex, an incident that claimed the life of one worker and injured seven others.

The accident occurred on Friday at the ongoing project site, prompting the activation of emergency response and safety measures.

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, Danladi Adamu, the government confirmed that eight workers were involved in the incident.

According to the statement, the seven injured workers were taken for medical treatment, with five admitted to the Gombe State Specialist Hospital and two to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

The government confirmed that one of the workers died from injuries sustained in the collapse.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya was briefed on the incident and expressed condolences to the deceased’s family.

The governor also directed that all injured workers receive full medical treatment at the government’s expense.

He further instructed the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, along with relevant emergency, regulatory, and technical agencies, to immediately begin safety and accountability procedures.

The contractor handling the project and the supervising consultant have been directed to submit a formal incident report within 24 hours, followed by a preliminary investigation report and a comprehensive technical report detailing the cause of the collapse and recommendations.

The government said further actions would be guided by the investigation’s findings and in line with applicable engineering and safety standards.

It reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing strict safety, quality and engineering standards in the execution of public infrastructure projects and pledged to provide additional updates as investigations progress.
