Operation Dudula, March Movement Picket SAHRC

Members of Operation Dudula and the March Movement staged demonstrations today at the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) offices in Durban. The groups accuse the commission of protecting undocumented migrants and are demanding that foreign nationals be barred from accessing public healthcare services—a demand civil society groups have condemned as illegal and inhumane.

News Central reports that March Movement representative Teresa Nortjie said both groups share a common sentiment: “Put South Africans first.”

Operation Dudula member Agnes Masuku echoed this view, claiming, “Foreigners must all leave the country; they are all known for criminal activities and drug sales!”

In KwaZulu-Natal, provincial Operation Dudula spokesperson Sifiso Manyala stressed that their focus is on prioritising South Africans, not inciting hate. His remarks follow backlash over the movement’s stance on undocumented migrants.

Meanwhile, in Johannesburg, a counter-protest is taking place around Jorissen and Melle Street in Braamfontein, where Abahlali BaseMjondolo activists have rallied against xenophobic tactics while calling for broader social justice reforms.

Today’s demonstrations follow weeks of protest by Operation Dudula at hospitals to throw out illegal migrants from health facilities.

They marched on the streets of Braamfontein with flags, chanting derogatory songs seeking the expulsion of foreigners from South Africa.

One member of the Operation Dudula said members of Abahlali Basemjondolo are making it difficult for them to submit their memorandum.

“We don’t want to deliver a memorandum in front of these people, they are infringing on our rights. It looks like under pretext, you brought these people, so we don’t want to deliver the memorandum,” he said.
