Three people have died while 20 others sustained injuries in a road crash at Tonkere town, Osun State, on Saturday.

The accident occurred along the Ife-Ilesa Expressway and involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a Volkswagen Golf car.

Osun Sector Commander of the Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Sunday Adebayo, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Osogbo.

He said preliminary findings showed that speeding and dangerous driving contributed to the crash.

Adebayo said 23 people were involved, including 11 females, nine males and three children.

The deceased comprised two females and one male.

“Three people died. We have about 20 others who were injured in the accident,” Adebayo said.

“The accident happened due to speeding and dangerous driving,” he added.

FRSC patrol teams from Ife and Ilesa were deployed to the scene for rescue operations and traffic management.

The injured victims were taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical treatment.

Adebayo urged motorists to drive cautiously, stressing that reducing speed could lower the severity of injuries and fatalities during crashes.

He also assured residents that the FRSC would continue road safety campaigns and public enlightenment programmes across the state.

The sector commander urged motorists to recognise their responsibility towards other road users and make road safety a shared responsibility.
