A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Anthony Ehilebo, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of stifling opposition parties to maintain dominance ahead of the 2027 election.

Ehilebo’s remarks come five days after opposition parties, including the PDP and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), agreed to field a single presidential candidate in the 2027 election.

While speaking on News Central’s Politics HQ on Wednesday, Ehilebo recalled when President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, told Leke Abejide, the lawmaker representing Yagba federal constituency in Kogi State, to remain in the ADC to “fight and scatter” the party.

“The way government officials talk down on Nigerians, you have a minister of works speaking down on people, you have the chief of staff at a public function saying that Abejide should remain in the ADC and keep them where they are,” said Elihebo.

“And then you think that Nigerians are just going to roll over, and as it is now, it looks like APC wants to be the only party on the ballot between now and 2027.”

According to him, no other political party has repressed opposition parties as much as the APC in recent times.

“It has never happened in Nigeria. The PDP was in power for 16 years. There was no time PDP frustrated other political parties as much as we are seeing today,” he added.

“The death of our democracy, right, will signal the spiral into chaos, because if by chance tomorrow any utterance from the court does not sit well with a section of political people in Nigeria, what do you think their reaction will be?”
