A passenger plane carrying 36 people overran the runway at the Mandera airstrip in northeastern Kenya on Friday morning.
The Embraer aircraft, operated by the domestic carrier EBB Air, had departed from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport shortly before 7:00 a.m.
Despite the plane careering off the tarmac and into dense roadside bushes, aviation officials confirmed that all 32 passengers and four crew members were accounted for and escaped the incident without any injuries.
The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. as the plane attempted to land at the remote airstrip, which is situated near Kenya’s borders with Somalia and Ethiopia.
Images circulating on social media, though not yet independently verified, depicted the aircraft’s fuselage submerged in thickets with only the tail section visible.
While the passengers were unharmed, the aviation source noted that the plane sustained significant damage during the skid.
Local authorities and the Kenya Airports Authority have launched an investigation to determine the precise cause of the runway overshoot.
