Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has said that his country could withdraw from the “Board of Peace” led by Donald Trump if it fails to deliver meaningful benefits for Palestinians.

According to a government statement, Prabowo told leaders of several Muslim organisations that Indonesia had joined the US president’s Peace Board to help secure a lasting settlement in the Gaza Strip.

However, he reportedly made it clear that Indonesia would reconsider its participation if the initiative did not serve Palestinian interests or align with the country’s national priorities.

The remarks were relayed by Hanif Alatas of the Islamic Brotherhood Front, who said the president stressed that Indonesia would not remain in the body if it ceased to offer tangible benefits to Palestine.

“The President said that if he sees that there is no longer any benefit for Palestine… and it is not in line with Indonesia’s national interest, then he will withdraw,” Hanif said.

Prabowo has faced increasing criticism from Muslim groups at home over his decision to join the peace body and his pledge to deploy thousands of Indonesian peacekeeping troops to Gaza under a ceasefire arrangement that ended two years of devastating conflict in the region.

Earlier this month, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the country’s top Islamic clerical authority, called on the government to withdraw from the board, arguing that the initiative would not lead to genuine peace for Palestinians.

Prabowo attended the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington, D.C., last month, where he also pledged that Indonesia would contribute about 8,000 troops to the Gaza Strip as part of an International Stabilisation Force.
