A decomposing body has been discovered in the trunk of a vehicle parked near the stadium where Iran’s national football team is training for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.

According to AFP, police found the body while matches were underway in the tournament, which is being jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.

The corpse was discovered in the trunk of a grey Toyota SUV bearing California licence plates.

The vehicle was parked in a supermarket lot directly opposite Caliente Stadium, where Iran’s national team, known as Team Melli, has been training ahead of its three group-stage matches in the United States.

Specialists dressed in white protective suits examined the scene before removing the body. The Tijuana prosecutor’s office said the discovery was made by a police patrol unit.

“Upon inspecting the vehicle, they found a person wrapped in a black bag in the trunk, showing signs of violence,” a spokesperson said, adding that the SUV is believed to have been abandoned on Wednesday.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased or announced any arrests in connection with the case.

The discovery comes following persistent security concerns in Mexico. Tijuana, a border city adjacent to the United States, is widely regarded as one of the country’s most dangerous areas due to the activities of powerful drug cartels.

According to official statistics, more than 1,200 homicides were recorded in the city in 2025.

Since arriving in Mexico, the Iranian team has been under heavy security, travelling between its hotel and training venue under armed military escort.

On Friday, the team’s convoy departed the stadium just minutes after the body was removed. AFP reported that there was no immediate response from the team regarding whether the incident would affect its security arrangements.
