Russian strikes on Ukraine killed at least two people early on Saturday, local authorities said, a day after a deadly attack on a crowded shopping centre killed at least 20 people.

In Kyiv, the city’s military administration said a warehouse in the Darnytskyi district caught fire after authorities issued a warning over an incoming ballistic missile.

“According to preliminary information, unfortunately, there is one person dead and several injured,” the administration said on Telegram.

In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, a Russian drone strike killed a man and injured four others, according to regional military governor Ivan Fedorov.

The latest attacks followed a wave of Russian strikes on Friday that killed at least 20 people across Ukraine.

According to AFP, sixteen of those killed were in a daytime drone attack on a busy shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Rescue teams worked through the night at the site, with regional military governor Oleksandr Ganzha saying nine people remained missing, including two children.

Emergency services said 130 people were injured in the attack, including 23 children.

The United Nations said Ukraine’s civilian death toll so far this year had reached its highest level since the early months of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Kyiv has repeatedly urged its allies to provide additional air defence support as Moscow intensifies its aerial campaign. Ukrainian forces have particularly struggled to intercept Russia’s ballistic missile barrages.

Ukraine has also stepped up strikes on Russian territory in recent months, partly in an effort to increase pressure on Moscow to negotiate an end to the war, now in its fifth year.

However, diplomatic efforts have yet to produce a breakthrough. Russia is demanding extensive territorial and political concessions from Kyiv, terms Zelensky has rejected.

The Ukrainian president has argued that accepting Moscow’s demands would effectively amount to capitulation and could leave Ukraine vulnerable to another Russian attack.
