Holger Rune, previously ranked world number 4, has withdrawn from the US Open while he recovers from an Achilles tendon injury that has sidelined him since October.
The 23-year-old Dane has not played a competitive match since suffering the injury during his semi-final at the Stockholm Open last year.
Rune had appeared to be closing in on a return after photos emerged on social media this week showing him playing practice sets in Spain with Carlos Alcaraz.
Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, has also been sidelined since April with a wrist injury.
He announced on social media Thursday that he was “back” as he prepares to defend his US Open title when the tournament begins in New York on August 30.

Rune also said his return was approaching in a post on X featuring a photo of him with Alcaraz and others.
“Really happy for my improvements and level,” Rune wrote. “And we keep working.”
He added that his team had decided against making a Grand Slam his first tournament back.
“My team and I have decided not to have a Grand Slam as my first tournament coming back,” he said.
“US Open see you next year.”
“Can’t wait to see you all VERY soon,” Rune added.
US Open organisers confirmed that Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta will replace Rune in the main draw.
