The Ghana Police Service has arrested six suspects and recovered GH¢300,000 stolen during a highway robbery on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway in the Bono East Region.
The police, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said officers responded swiftly to intelligence about the robbery on the night of July 19, leading to the arrest of all six suspects and the recovery of the stolen cash.
According to the police, officers on duty at the Portor Police Barrier received information at about 8:30 p.m. that a robbery was in progress a short distance from the checkpoint.
“Police personnel on duty at the Portor Police Barrier under the Kintampo Police Division received intelligence that a robbery was in progress a few meters away from the barrier on the Portor-Gurumpe Highway,” the statement read.
The police said a response team rushed to the scene, where several suspects fled into nearby bushes.
“On arrival, about four suspects fled into the bush. However, the team arrested Abdul Sadat Ali, age 24 years, the driver of a Toyota Voxy,” the statement added.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly identified another accomplice, Samad Issahaka, the driver of a Kia Rhino truck, who was subsequently arrested.
Investigators later discovered what they described as an insider conspiracy involving the Kia Rhino’s driver.
According to the police, the truck’s owner, Yahaya Seidu, had instructed Issahaka to transport him to Buipe to purchase cattle. Knowing his employer was carrying a large amount of cash, the driver allegedly conspired with five others to rob him.
“Further investigations revealed that Yahaya Seidu, owner of the Kia Rhino, had instructed his driver to convey him to Buipe to purchase cattle. The driver, knowing his boss was carrying money, conspired with five others to rob them on the highway,” the statement said.
Police alleged that the suspects, armed with a toy pistol, followed the vehicle from Offinso in the Ashanti Region before intercepting it shortly after the Portor Police Barrier.
“Armed with a toy pistol, the suspects trailed the Kia Rhino and its occupants, caught up with them after the Portor Police Barrier, and robbed them of GH¢300,000 in cash,” the statement added.
The Regional Command said personnel from its Counter Terrorism Unit, working alongside the local police patrol team, pursued the fleeing suspects into the bush and arrested four additional suspects identified as Abdul Rahman Mashud, 21; Asigri Avoka, 25; Awini Stephen, 19; and Faisal Salifu, 26.
A search conducted during the operation led to the recovery of the stolen money.
During questioning, the suspects allegedly admitted tracking the victim’s vehicle from Offinso before carrying out the robbery.
“During interrogation, the suspects admitted they trailed the Kia Rhino from Offinso in the Ashanti Region and carried out the robbery at Portor in the Bono East Region after they had been tipped off by suspect Samad Issahaka,” the statement said.
The six suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations.
The Ghana Police Service commended the officers involved in the operation, saying their swift response prevented the suspects from escaping with the stolen cash.
