United States President Donald Trump has announced plans for a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa, describing it as the largest in American history.
Trump revealed the project on Monday, as Republicans seek to strengthen their position in Iowa ahead of November’s midterm elections.
“Today we’re thrilled to announce that Mesabi Metallics will be building the largest steel plant in American history in the great state of Iowa,” Trump said in the Oval Office.

Mesabi Metallics will build the facility, which the White House said will use iron ore from the company’s new mine in Minnesota.
The administration said the mine is the first new iron mine to open in the United States in 50 years.

The announcement comes as Republicans face growing concerns over voter dissatisfaction with living costs and the continued war in Iran.

Iowa is traditionally viewed as a state Republicans can rely on, but the party is facing a more closely watched contest ahead of the midterms.
Trump won Iowa by a wide margin in the 2024 presidential election. However, Republican Senate candidate Ashley Hinson, who joined him in the Oval Office, is currently trailing her Democratic opponent in polling.
Republicans are seeking to retain control of both chambers of Congress in November. Losing either the House of Representatives or the Senate could complicate Trump’s legislative agenda.
