Torrential downpours swept through Tripoli on Tuesday, causing severe flooding that killed two people and inundated roads across the Libyan capital.

Emergency crews and the Tripoli Red Crescent recovered the body of a bank employee who died from an electric shock, as well as another man whose vehicle was submerged in rising floodwaters.

Eyewitnesses reported widespread destruction, with heavy runoff submerging numerous cars and flooding residential streets.

Central Tripoli Mayor Fadel Abu Arqoub described the situation as catastrophic following just two and a half hours of heavy rain.

In response to rising water levels entering homes, Libya’s state-owned electricity company cut power across affected neighbourhoods as a safety precaution.
