Senegal has delayed the nationwide start of the school year following severe rains and destructive flash floods that claimed multiple lives across the country.
Torrential downpours over the weekend submerged entire neighbourhoods, cut off primary roadways, and crippled transportation networks in the capital city of Dakar.
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye confirmed that the storms caused fatalities, while local media reported that a mother and child drowned inside their Dakar residence.

Senegal’s rainy season typically spans from June through October, but this year’s extreme deluge caused unprecedented destruction across several regions.

The Ministry of Education pushed the opening of primary and secondary schools from Wednesday to next Monday to prioritise student safety and permit cleanup crews to sanitise, disinfect, and repair damaged facilities.
Meteorologists attribute the intensifying extreme weather patterns to climate change and the impending arrival of an extraordinarily strong El Niño event.
