The UK’s Green Party voted Sunday at its annual conference to classify Zionism as a form of racism, triggering intense criticism from Jewish organisations and the Israeli government.
Party members passed the resolution by a vote of 1,022 to 813, officially declaring that the party will treat Zionism “as any other form of racism” while endorsing a single, democratic Palestinian state across historic Palestine.
A party spokesperson described the vote as “a serious and deeply felt debate within our membership.”

The decision drew immediate condemnation from key Jewish leadership organisations in the United Kingdom.
In a joint statement before the vote, the Board of Deputies, the Community Security Trust, and the Jewish Leadership Council warned that the measure creates an overtly hostile platform and threatens the safety of British Jews.

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the resolution as crossing the boundaries of legitimate political discourse, while Israeli President Isaac Herzog publicly labelled the decision a disgrace, affirming that Zionism represents the legitimate national liberation movement of the Jewish people.
Today, the Green Party in Britain ceased to act as a political party and became a body that gives legitimacy to terrorism. The Greens have adopted not only the green of Hamas, but also its ideology: the elimination of the State of Israel through armed struggle.
The shocking resolution adopted today legitimises armed struggle, calls for a Palestinian state “from the river to the sea” – meaning the destruction of the State of Israel – and labels as “racist” the aspiration of the Jewish people for self-determination.
This goes far beyond the boundaries of legitimate political debate. As long as this resolution remains in place, it will be a stain on the history of the United Kingdom.
Every political party in Britain, first and foremost the governing Labour Party, must unequivocally reject this twisted resolution.

The contentious vote highlighted deepening internal rifts within the party leadership. Deputy Leader Zack Polanski skipped the vote entirely, even as three of the party’s five Members of Parliament publicly opposed the measure.
While Polanski has recently leveraged criticism of the Israel-Hamas conflict to boost party membership, senior party figures remain split over the policy direction, which comes amid broader international debates following UN investigative reports on the Gaza conflict.
