The United States Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Thursday, October 1, 2026, in observance of Nigeria’s Independence Day holiday, the U.S. Mission Nigeria said.
The closure was announced in a post on X on Wednesday.

Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026.
The Ministry of Interior had earlier declared the day a public holiday.
“As we celebrate 66th years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said.
The U.S. Embassy and Consulate regularly observe both American and Nigerian public holidays, during which routine consular services, including visa processing, are unavailable.
