Resident doctors at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) have resolved to join the nationwide strike declared by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), which is scheduled to commence on Monday, January 12, 2026.

The decision was reached at an emergency general meeting of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), UUTH chapter, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Thursday.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting and endorsed by the association’s president, Dr Ekomobong Udoh, and general secretary, Dr Kenneth Ikott, the doctors announced plans to stage a peaceful protest within the UUTH premises from 9 a.m. on Monday, in line with NARD’s directive.

Speaking on the action, Udoh said the strike followed the Nigerian government’s failure to fully implement the Memorandum of Understanding signed with resident doctors in November 2025.

He explained that the industrial action, tagged Total, Indefinite, and Comprehensive Strike (TICS) 2.0 and driven by the slogan “No Implementation, No Going Back,” would only be suspended after the government meets the association’s minimum demands.

He listed the demands to include the reinstatement of the “FTH Lokoja Five,” payment of outstanding promotion and salary arrears, and full implementation of the professional allowance table with arrears provided for in the 2026 budget.

Other demands include official clarification from the Federal Ministry of Health on skipping and entry-level issues, with corresponding circulars to chief executives.

Additional demands outlined by the association include the reintroduction and implementation of the Specialist Allowance, resolution of delays and arrears in house officers’ salaries through the issuance of a pay advisory, recategorisation of membership certificates, issuance of certificates after Part I by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), commencement of locum and work-hours regulation committees, and the resumption and timely conclusion of the Collective Bargaining Agreement process.
