The United States Mission in Nigeria has clarified that obtaining a US visa does not automatically guarantee admission into the country, noting that entry is determined by border officials upon arrival.
The mission said a visa only permits a traveller to reach a US port of entry, where US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) determines whether they may enter.
“A U.S. visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. It lets you travel to a U.S. port of entry. When you arrive, U.S. Customs and Border Protection decides whether you may enter,” the mission wrote in a post on its official X handle.

The post was accompanied by an infographic carrying the same message and the hashtag #VisaWiseTravelSmart.
The reminder comes amid heightened scrutiny of US visa and entry policies, including recent travel restrictions imposed by Washington on several countries.
