Police and security forces rushed to the White House area on Saturday evening after reports of gunfire, AFP journalists said.

US President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time as he continued efforts to negotiate a deal with Iran.

Police sealed off access to the complex, while National Guard troops prevented an AFP reporter from entering the area.

Journalists on the North Lawn said on X that they were instructed to run and take shelter inside the White House press briefing room.

According to a reporter, ‘approximately 20-30’ shots were heard in Washington before Secret Service officials rushed to take reporters inside.
