The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YBSIEC) has scheduled elections across the state’s 17 local government areas for Saturday, June 6, 2026.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in Damaturu by Permanent Member I of YBSIEC, Mohammed Nguru, during a stakeholders’ meeting attended by security officials, political party leaders under the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), and members of the media.
Nguru said the election timetable had been approved by Governor Mai Mala Buni.
He noted that the stakeholders’ meeting was convened to ensure collective effort, cooperation, and shared responsibility among security agencies, political parties, and the media in conducting credible elections.

He explained that the commission was finalising arrangements to issue comprehensive election guidelines to all political parties, outlining procedures, timelines, and requirements. He urged political parties to study the guidelines carefully and comply fully to ensure a smooth and orderly electoral process.
Nguru encouraged political parties to present candidates of quality, repute, and substance, highlighting that the leadership elected at the local government level directly influences service delivery, accountability, and community development.
He stated that chairmanship candidates must be at least 30 years old, while councillorship candidates must be at least 25 years old.
He added that all aspirants must possess a minimum educational qualification of a school certificate or its equivalent and undergo mandatory security screening to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
Nomination fees were fixed at ₦300,000 for chairmanship, ₦250,000 for vice-chairmanship, and ₦200,000 for councillorship positions.
