Youths Champion Unity, Responsible Social Media Use at TEDxNTICAbujaYouth

Young Nigerians took centre stage at the TEDxNTICAbujaYouth event held on May 10, 2025, using their voices to demand responsible communication and unity in an era dominated by viral content and misinformation.

From resilience and diversity to ethical journalism and education, the student speakers were passionate and powerful. Nafisa Aliyu reminded attendees that setbacks don’t define you. “Wherever you are in life, no matter how low you think you are, how much you think you failed, you can get back up with the right determination and effort,” she said.

This second edition of TEDxNTICAbuja Youth 2025 brought together students, businesspersons, young professionals from all walks of life to pursue their passion, dreams, and aspirations. Attendees were inspired by a lineup of carefully chosen speakers who shared their insights and experiences.

Muhammed Kerim Korkmaz used his mixed identity to advocate inclusion. “Embracing our differences—I chose the topic because I am Turkish and some people are Nigerian because I am in Nigeria. So that’s why I chose the topic—so that people know they should not do something bad to others just because they are different.”

David Mark Obe added, “For those like me, who are self-centered, you could do something similar, find something that helps you but also helps others in the process, if we can all inculcate this habit, I believe the future we have set out for ourselves, could be way better.”

The students were joined by Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who stressed the importance of media literacy.

“It is important for journalists to imbibe media information literacy because that is the only tool required to discern between fake news and real news, between misinformation and accurate information,” he said.

On social media, the minister stated: “You need that because in this age, the social media especially can both be a unifier and also an agent of destruction depending on how you use it. We want everyone to use social media especially—which has come to stay, by the way—as a tool for unifying all of us.”

Other presenters include Dr Vivian Obiageli Egwuatu Sonny-Nsirim – Founder of Young Moms Support Initiative. Popular producer and comedian Charles Inojie. Security expert, Kabiru Adamu and Chika Chukwumerejie- Nigerian Taekwondo Athlete.

Managing Director of NTIC, Dr. Fevzullah Bilgin highlighted that TEDxNTICAbuja offers valuable insights into the most pressing challenges faced by this generation, ultimately paving the way for a more promising future. The event influences the path of our youth, guiding them as they delve into their passions and areas of expertise.
