Dozens of people are feared dead after a mining pit collapsed at the Kadauri mining site in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The tragedy struck on Thursday as artisanal miners worked underground.
Local sources said that rescuers had so far recovered around 13 bodies from the debris, while many others remain trapped beneath the rubble.
Confirming the incident, the Executive Secretary of the Zamfara State Solid Minerals Development Agency, Nasiru Bamanga, said he had received preliminary reports but was still awaiting comprehensive details.
“I have heard about the incident but have not yet received the full information. I will visit the site later today and, God willing, will provide complete details when I return,” Bamanga said.
