At least 100 civilians were killed in a military airstrike on a market in Zamfara State, Amnesty International Nigeria has said, calling on authorities to investigate the incident.

In a statement posted on X on Monday, the human rights organisation said the attack occurred on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Tumfa market in the Zurmi local government area.

“More dead bodies are still being recovered while others died on the way to hospitals,” Amnesty said.

According to Amnesty, people at the weekly market saw military jets hovering around 12:00 midday. By 2:00 pm, the jets returned and bombarded the market.

Amnesty said dozens of people injured are currently receiving treatment at general hospitals in Zurmi and Shinkafi.

“Eyewitnesses said many of those killed are women and girls,” it added.

The organisation noted that a similar incident occurred in April at Jilli, on the border between Borno and Yobe states, in which over 100 civilians were killed by a military air strike on a weekly market.

“This pattern of human rights violation is increasingly becoming the norm, with villagers at the receiving end of atrocities by both armed groups, bandits and the military,” Amnesty said.

“Launching air raids is not a legitimate law enforcement method by anyone’s standard. Such reckless use of deadly force is unlawful, outrageous and lays bare the Nigerian military’s disregard for civilian lives.”

Amnesty called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the attack, saying, “The Nigerian authorities must investigate the horrific military air strike that killed at least 100 civilians yesterday at Tumfa market in Zurmi local government Zamfara state.”
