Authorities were also investigating whether a ruptured water main in a neighbourhood in Tokyo was connected to the earthquake, Kyodo News reported.

Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency warned residents of an increased risk of landslides, noting that heavy rainfall on Saturday may have weakened the soil in parts of the affected region.

The agency also cautioned that strong aftershocks could occur in the coming days and urged residents to remain alert.
