Since the military takeover in October 2021, Gen. Burhan and Hemedti have held the positions of chairman and deputy of the ruling Sovereign Council, respectively.

Gen. Burhan designated Malik Agar as his deputy in a proclamation made public on Friday. Mr. Agar also serves on the Sovereign Council.

He gave orders for the decree to be implemented right away to the necessary state authorities and the Sovereign Council secretariat.

The RSF was disbanded and its members were labeled as rebels by the army chief last month after a power struggle broke out between the opposing groups.

Since then, the nation has descended into chaos and deadly violence.
