A respected elder statesman and retired Major General, Paul Omu, who once served as the military governor of the now-defunct South-Eastern State (comprising present-day Cross River and Akwa Ibom States), has passed away at the age of 84.
His family announced his death, which occurred on April 29, 2025, noting that General Omu hailed from Igbide in the Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State. Burial arrangements will be communicated at a later date.
Described by his family as a devoted husband, patriot, statesman, soldier, and community leader, Major-General Omu dedicated his life to serving Nigeria and his Isoko community.

Throughout his distinguished military career, he held various significant command and administrative roles, notably as the military governor of the South-Eastern State from July 1975 to July 1978, during which time he initiated crucial infrastructural and policy reforms.
In 1985, he was appointed commander of the Command and Staff College and a member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council, Nigeria’s highest governing body at the time.
General Omu also played a vital role in Nigeria’s transition to democracy, serving as chairman of the Constitutional Conference Commission in 1994.
Furthermore, in 2009, he was appointed chairman of the governing board of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).
Beyond his national service, General Omu remained deeply involved in the development of his Isoko community, serving as president of the Isoko Development Union (IDU) from 2014 to 2015, where he championed unity, education, and economic progress.
He is survived by his wife, Senator Stella Omu; six children; siblings; and numerous grandchildren.
