Mexico City Secures Formula One Grand Prix Contract Until 2028

Mexico City will continue to host Formula One races until at least 2028 following a new contract extension announced on Wednesday.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed enthusiasm over the deal, highlighting the electric atmosphere that the Mexican Grand Prix brings to the sport.

“We’re thrilled to confirm that the Mexico City Grand Prix will remain on the Formula 1 calendar through 2028,” he said.

“The passion and energy from the fans in Mexico City create one of the most memorable experiences in the championship each year.”

The city’s mayor, Clara Brugada, also welcomed the news, declaring Mexico City to be “the home of Formula 1.”

She noted that the event brings more than just sporting excitement.

“The Grand Prix not only attracts motorsport enthusiasts but also boosts the local economy, enhances our tourism infrastructure, and fills us with pride,” she said.

Brugada estimated that the 2025 edition of the race will contribute approximately 21 billion pesos (around $1.1 billion) to the city’s economy.

Situated at over 2,200 metres (7,200 feet) above sea level, the Mexico City circuit presents unique technical challenges. The thinner air affects turbochargers, engine cooling systems, and brakes, while also reducing aerodynamic drag.

Formula One returned to the iconic Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in 2015 after a 23-year hiatus, reviving enthusiasm for the sport across the nation.

The 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix is scheduled to take place from October 24 to 26.
