Niger Workers Demand Reforms on May Day Rally

Workers from across Niger State assembled in Minna on Thursday to mark the 2025 International Workers’ Day, using the occasion to call for improved welfare, better working conditions, and urgent pension reforms.

The event, which drew civil servants, union leaders, and government officials, featured solidarity marches and speeches addressing the difficulties faced by both active workers and pensioners in the state.

Governor Umaru Bago, in his address, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing workers’ welfare at all levels. He pledged to prioritise the prompt payment of gratuities and the clearance of outstanding entitlements owed to retirees.

“Our government is fully committed to the welfare of civil servants, both active and retired. We understand the sacrifices you make, and we are determined to ensure that all outstanding gratuities are cleared without further delay,” Bago stated.

He also praised the contributions of the workforce to the development of Niger State and pledged continued engagement with labour unions to resolve pressing issues.

Speaking on behalf of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), TUC Chairman Ibrahim Gana—representing NLC Chairman Idris Lafene—urged the government to legislate a policy that would make pensions a first-line charge on the state’s revenue.

“This policy will ensure that retirees receive their entitlements alongside serving workers. It is a matter of justice, dignity, and respect for our senior citizens who have served the state diligently,” Gana said.

He further emphasised the importance of dialogue and cooperation between government and labour, as a means of avoiding industrial disputes and boosting productivity.

The celebration was rounded off with colourful parades by various unions and a renewed call for unity among workers in the pursuit of their rights.
