The Rwandan government has eased operating restrictions for bars, nightclubs, and other entertainment establishments during the festive season. Restrictions on “non-essential services” were initially imposed in September to manage public disturbance, leading to discontent among hotel, restaurant, and nightclub owners due to shortened opening hours.
In a recent statement, the state-run Rwanda Development Board announced an extension of opening hours from December 15 to January 17 until 02:00 local time. Notably, restrictions will be lifted on Fridays, weekends, and public holidays.
“The end-of-year festive season has begun, and the government of Rwanda wants people to celebrate and enjoy,” stated the board, emphasising that the new guidelines also apply to private events.
However, the board cautioned against violations, emphasising that establishments should adhere to rules concerning noise pollution. As per the measures introduced in September, sound levels in commercial areas are limited to 55 decibels during nighttime hours.
