Sudan Fuel Depot Ablaze After Paramilitary Drone Attack, Says Ministry

Sudan’s military-aligned government reported that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) conducted a second drone attack in Port Sudan within two days.

The latest strike ignited a fire at the nation’s primary fuel depot, sending thick black smoke over the Red Sea port city for hours, according to AFP reporters.

Authorities are struggling to contain the blaze, which the energy ministry warned has spread through fuel storage facilities, raising concerns of a “potential disaster.”

This attack follows the first RSF drone strike on Port Sudan since the conflict began in April 2023.

The RSF, having lost ground in Khartoum and elsewhere since March, has increasingly used drones to strike deeper into territories held by the army. The paramilitary group has not yet commented on these recent attacks.

Energy Minister Mohieldin Naeem Saeed, representing the army-backed government, denounced Monday’s strike as a “terrorist operation” aimed at civilian infrastructure.

The targeted fuel depot in Port Sudan is crucial for supplying the army-controlled north and east of the country.

Port Sudan became the interim seat of government and a hub for UN agencies after the war erupted, remaining largely untouched by violence until these recent drone attacks.

Hundreds of thousands of displaced people have sought refuge in the city.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands, displaced 13 million people, and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis of hunger and displacement.
