Uganda Military Chief Threatens US Envoy With Expulsion

Uganda’s military Chief of General Staff Muhoozi Kainerubaga has demanded that the US ambassador to Uganda apologise to President Yoweri Museveni or leave the East African nation by Monday.

Kainerubaga, the president’s son, posted on social media on Friday, accusing William Popp of “disrespecting our beloved and celebrated president and undermining the constitution of Uganda,” as reported by local Ugandan media.

He said that the dispute involves Museveni, the government, and the people of Uganda.

“This is not a personal issue between me and the current US Ambassador; this is a national issue, and you’ll see that no foreign country will ever dominate Uganda again.”

Although Popp’s alleged offences were not specified, this week, the US sanctioned four Ugandan police officers for reported human rights violations.
