Egypt is currently home to over 1.2 million Sudanese refugees, with hundreds arriving daily, according to a United Nations official.
The ongoing war in Sudan, which has displaced millions, has left more than 3.1 million people seeking refuge outside the country, with Egypt becoming the largest host of Sudanese refugees.
UNHCR Egypt reports that over 546,000 Sudanese refugees are officially registered, with many more awaiting registration. Despite Egypt’s tightening of entry requirements, including visa mandates and security clearances, the country remains a key refuge for those fleeing the conflict.
The strain on Egypt’s resources is considerable, with the UN calling for urgent international assistance to alleviate the burden. Refugees are also crossing into neighbouring countries like Chad, South Sudan, and Libya as the humanitarian crisis continues to escalate.
