Rescuers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial hub, are working tirelessly to save dozens of people trapped under the rubble of a collapsed multi-storey building in the bustling Kariakoo market.
The disaster occurred on Saturday, killing at least one person, according to Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa. As the search for survivors continues, rescuers—including army personnel—are using bare hands, drills, and sledgehammers alongside excavators to clear the debris.
The Tanzania Red Cross Society reported on X that 56 people have been rescued so far.
Witnesses told The Citizen newspaper that the building was undergoing underground expansion the day before it collapsed.
Dar es Salaam, home to over five million people, is one of the world’s fastest-growing cities, according to the World Bank. However, the rapid urbanisation has raised concerns about building safety. This incident echoes a 2013 tragedy in the city, where a 16-storey building collapse claimed 34 lives.
