Tanzania Eases Visa Rules for Nigerian Citizens

Tanzania has removed Nigerian citizens from its “Referred Visa” category, allowing them to apply for standard visas through normal procedures instead of a lengthy pre-approval process.

The change was announced by Tanzania’s Immigration Services Department in a public notice dated September 25, 2026, and published on social media on Monday, September 28.

The notice, signed by Chief Spokesperson Paul Mselle, cited amendments published in Government Gazette No. 246 of 2026.

“The Immigration Department informs the public that citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have been officially removed from the Referred Visa Category, following published amendments in the Government Gazette number 246 of 2026.

“With immediate effect, Nigerian nationals travelling to the United Republic of Tanzania are no longer subject to referred visa restrictions and will follow standard visa application procedures through the official immigration online portal or designated entry points.”

Under the previous Referral Visa system, Nigerian nationals were required to apply for clearance from the Commissioner General of Immigration before travelling and were advised not to book flights until approval was granted.
