The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for justice and accountability for civilians who were allegedly murdered in Borno State’s Abisari hamlet by Nigerian Army agents.
The demand was made by Kemi Okonyedo, a member of the NHRC Governing Council, when the army was given the findings from the investigative panel on human rights abuses in counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast.
The study accused the military of purposefully killing residents in the Abasari hamlet while defending them against forced systematic abortions performed on women. Okonyedo is calling for compensation for those impacted.
“The murder of civilians in Abisari continues to be a serious violation that necessitates justice, accountability, and prompt action,” she stated.
“These problems are real; they are not hypothetical. Families are genuine, lives are impacted, and communities are still in pain; these issues need to be recognised and addressed. To rectify these transgressions, hold offenders accountable, and make sure that they don’t happen again, the panel’s recommendations offer a road map.
“One of the panel’s main recommendations is that the Federal Government make sure that the families and communities impacted by the Abisari killings receive sufficient reparations.”
