US, Taliban in Talks to Swap Detainees, Report Says

The Biden administration is in negotiations with the Taliban to exchange three Americans detained in Afghanistan for at least one high-profile prisoner held at Guantanamo Bay, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The deal reportedly involves the release of Americans Ryan Corbett, George Glezmann, and Mahmood Habibi, detained in Afghanistan in 2022, in return for Muhammad Rahim Al-Afghani, a man allegedly linked to Al-Qaeda and transferred to Guantanamo in 2008.

The negotiations come after the Biden administration sent 11 Guantanamo detainees to Oman, reducing the detention centre’s population significantly. Guantanamo, established post-9/11, has long been criticised for indefinite detention and alleged human rights abuses, with calls for its closure remaining unfulfilled.
