A sensational hat-trick from Justin Kluivert ended Newcastle’s 9-match winning streak, as Bournemouth claimed a dominant 4-1 victory at St. James’ Park on Saturday. The Cherries stormed into the Premier League top six, extending their own unbeaten run to 11 matches, while leaving Newcastle still in fourth, just one point ahead of Bournemouth in the race for Champions League spots.
Newcastle, aiming for a club record 10th consecutive win, were completely outclassed by Andoni Iraola’s side. Kluivert, the son of former Magpies striker Patrick Kluivert, was the standout performer, with Milos Kerkez adding a fourth in stoppage time to seal the emphatic victory.
Alexander Isak’s hopes of extending his Premier League scoring streak also ended, as he struggled to make an impact against a solid Bournemouth defence.
The visitors should have taken the lead early when Dango Ouattara’s shot was saved, and Antoine Semenyo blasted the rebound over. However, Kluivert made no mistake when he put Bournemouth ahead in the sixth minute. Although Bruno Guimaraes equalized for Newcastle with a header, Kluivert struck again before halftime to restore Bournemouth’s lead.
The Cherries dominated throughout, and despite a disallowed goal by Ouattara and a couple of near misses, Kluivert completed his hat-trick with a stunning effort from outside the box. Kerkez then rubbed salt into Newcastle’s wounds with a clinical finish in the dying moments.
The result leaves Newcastle reeling and Bournemouth firmly in the mix for a Champions League spot, ahead of defending champions Manchester City.
